John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.
My trips to Israel have increased my love for history. I saw a movie recently that gave me another snapshot into the history of the Jewish people. Walking with the Enemy is about a young Jewish man who posed as a Nazi officer to help save Jews from Hungary during World War 2. The film was very hard to watch and thought provoking.
It stirred my heart to pray that I would be my brother’s keeper. This became the prayer of other young adults as we left the Holocaust Memorial this year in Israel. It's easy to say I would never let this happen but I realize until I would actually be faced with real circumstancesI'll never know my response.
I thought of these quotes I shared at Vad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum in Israel:
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me. Martin Niemoller
If we do nothing when others are suffering we add to their injury. And over time we end up injured too. Christie Caine
I have always been humbled by the places God has taken me but the places of most impact will always be the Uganda Civil War memorial, Rwanda Genocide Memorial and Yad Vashem. Many individuals and people groups around the world have faced severe tragedy. Our generation can give a voice to those who have been silenced.
My prayer is that multitudes of young people would rise up in the earth and say “no matter what may come Lord, my life is yours.” Luke 9:24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. Living life completely abandoned to Him. Seasons come where we can feel like we want to control or know the outcome of circumstances in our life. Our abundant life comes in completely putting ourselves in His hands. Love and serve people. God knows the beginning to the end and each day is a gift from Him. May we be sons and daughters that live a life laid down, knowing that a surrendered life will be the fullest life.
